Let's be honest. We know, that we wont able to save the world with this website. But maybe we can change the world, just a little bit. Or someone’s world. We are trying to accomplish this for one, by pointing out a few facts that could be the reason for why there are less female than male skateboarders. And for the other by focusing on how it could be. How it would be, if there were no discrimination based on gender.

Sexism starts basically when a girl is first judged for being a girl and only after that for being a person.
Therefore sentences such as: "For a girl she’s damn good at skateboarding" is openly sexist, even if it’s meant as compliment.

Very clearly and most importantly: (Hetero-)Sexism is a socio-cultural problem. It's not only the skateboarding scene that has to deal with such discrimination. But it is a field that definitely has its problems with it. Because of some people that still act as if the middle ages had never passed and the Women's Right Movement had never happened. Sad but true.

At this website we shows examples we've collected over the years of exactly that kind of sexism in skateboarding.

Feel free to ask us anything and don't hesitate to speak your mind to us.

"SEX SELLS"?

"SEX SELLS"?
Is that so?
Seriously, does a Skateboard sell better, if it depicts a naked lady? Or if women in bikinis present it? That kind of male-focused marketing strategy is often found in the vast world of skateboarding. Female skateboarders are mostly ignored ignored as a potential target group. Women aren't thought of as skateboarders but as advertising sex objects - sexy billboard girls. Some ads are even highly pornographic. Why?

And that brings us to another subject of dangerous sexism: an illusionary ideal of beauty. Today female bodies have to be skinny and flawless. An ideal hardly realistic and even more difficult to attain naturally. The pressure to match this kind of beau ideal is grand for young girls. For many even unbearable, because not everyone is a little princess. And who says, that little princesses can't have bruises on their shins from skateboarding or wear baggy pants? And: What would the beauty ideal prince look like?

How did the naked Lady get on the board?

That's just how it is: After two lipslides the beauty fades, after a good noseslide say good-bye to that flawless teint. And seriously, who can actually bear to do a tailslide with such a deck? According to the law the depiction of nudity at work is prosecutable. So, if a pro skater rides that board at the park, is he or she liable to prosecution?

Breast vs Penis?

Wax shaped like a breast? Sure, maybe it feels good in ones hand, but smearing and grinding the artificial breast over the rail in order to wax it up? Outch! Dear industry, please think, before you produce. How sexy it must be for a girl, imagining how her guy gets his skateboard going with that wax breast and how he gets going thanks to her flesh breast... seriously? Maybe a penis-cruiser for lipsliding girls will do the trick and open the eyes of some guys?

Sexpanda?

The libido, the lust for sex, of a Panda is so low, that it has driven zoo directors into despair. Worrying about those cuddly little things becoming extinct. Therefore it's legitimate to ask, why in the world Enjoi uses two Pandas doing it doggy style in an advertisement. Does anyone know?

Uns fällt doch was Krasses ein:
Also, Jungs, ihr habt noch was nachzuholen!

Real bad tricks or extreme special spots or real bad tricks at extreme special spots are usual on the cover of skateboard magazines. At this point we wanted to exhibit a series of cover shots of female skateboarders in serious skate action. But we can't. Because we couldn't find enough covers depicting women skateboarding. Of how many can you think? And when did you read the last interview featuring a girl skateboarder?

Ah, wait a minute. There was that one thing...
There was that pro girl skateboarder. She was on the cover of a German mag doing an ollie wearing nothing but a corsage, girdle-suspenders and stockings. That's very courageous. We've never seen a guy doing anything like it. So which one of you male skateboarders has the BALLS for such a shot?

Even today most magazines focus on male skateboarders. Most of the time girls are only featured, if it's a special edition in pink.
But that is exactly the problem, girl skateboarders need to be covered on a regular basis just as their male colleagues are
because that is how role models are created. Role models that are inspiring, someone to look up to and to make you believe, that your dreams can come true - even if it's a dream of becoming a female pro skateboarder. So for the young girls sake, dear journalists, please do consider this, when you're planning your next issue or next covershot. Why not let a lady do the trick?

The distribution of prize money clearly shows the general emphasis of the skateboard business on male sports. Nevertheless, the following contests support female skateboarding, and present female competition in a landscape where they are the most supportive while others do not even include female skateboarding in their planning!

A quick comment on facebook or other social networks is easier typed than said. Many people see those virtual places as a haven of anonymity to speak their mind freely no matter how idiotic or even painful to others their comments might sometimes be - for thousands of friends and strangers alike to read.

Not convinced of the absurdity of some people's opinions and none reflected facebook-scribbles? Check out our Facebook-Rodeo game.

As a final statement, we show a screenshot of Karen Jonz (No. 1 in the world rankings at Women Vertskaters 2013) facebook status. We think that says it all.
